The knitting needles are a size 2 and fingering weight yarn is used. A crochet hook, size C or D, is also needed.

The knitting pattern for doll clothes can be modified slightly for antique and vintage dolls. Butterfly designs were not particularly popular in times past, so the sweater can be made without them. Also, the colors in this pattern, especially the purple and pink, were not popular in the past. The sweater would look very authentic if the color remained green and all the contrast was done in white, or if the sweater, cap and booties were entirely green. All the soft pastel baby colors were popular in the past.

In these modern times we sometimes forget how important hand knitted clothes were for warmth in the past. Many an expectant mother and grandmother would spend their evenings knitting because they knew that the garments were critical to the warmth and health of the baby.

In fact, these hand knit garments were critical to the warmth and health of everyone. Houses were not heated to the extent they are today and often only the kitchen and living room were heated.

Also, people of all ages spent far more time outside exposed to the weather. Warm knitted wool garments were critical for keeping warm. During World War I, the United States government asked the women of the country to knit wool socks, sweaters and others garments for the soldiers. Women donated hundreds of thousands of knitted garments to help with the war. And it did make a tremendous difference for the survival of our soldiers.
