Mexican clothing for 18-inch dolls: One of the best known dresses in Mexican clothing is the China Poblana. It is based on the legend of a princess from India who was kidnapped by pirates and brought to Mexico in the 17th century. Historically it may be traced to the role Mexico played in the Spain-Asia trade route. The white square-necked blouse called a huipil, designed by Heather Smith, is often stitched with colorful embroidery. The model wears a huipil with ribbon trims to embellish the sleeves and neckline in place of embroidery. A red and green skirt decorated with sequin roses is worn over a white petticoat. A long silky rectangular shawl with self-fringing at the ends is draped over the arms. Don't forget the paper flowers for her hair! Pattern for Mexican clothing includes huipil, petticoat, skirt, shawl, paper flowers. On May 5, the holiday of Cinco de Mayo or the "Fifth of May" is celebrated all over the United States. Here in Colorado, Denver is full of people wearing colorful Mexican clothing, eating, dancing and celebrating. It is a time for Mexicans and Americans to honor the friendship between Mexico and the United States. The holiday started years ago with a battle. In 1861, France, Spain and England sent naval ships to Mexico because of a debt. An agreement between the counties was reached in a few months and the British and Spanish ships left for their countries. But the French ships were ordered by Napoleon III to attack Mexico. On May 5, 1862, the French Navy tried to capture the forts of Guadalupe and Loreto in Puebla de Los Angeles, Mexico. However, the Mexican men, under the leadership of General Ignazio Zaragoza, fought hard and, even though they were outnumbered, they were not defeated. Unfortunately, even though they won the battle, they lost the war. The French conquered Mexico and a European emperor became the leader of Mexico. Three years later this emperor was killed and Mexicans regained the control of their country. Even during the time that the European emperor ruled Mexico, the Mexican holiday of Cinco de Mayo was celebrated. Mexican clothing fits 18-inch dolls (those with vinyl head, arms and legs and a cloth stuffed body) such as The American Girls Collection® by the Pleasant Company, Götz Dolls® (non-designer) and many others. The Mexican clothing is actually designed to fit The American Girls Collection® and Götz Dolls® (non-designer) loosely to allow for individual differences in the stuffing of the dolls. It will also fit the following dolls: Dress Me Doll© from The Martha Pullen Company, Faithful Friends Collection®, Liberty Landing®, Girls on the Go®, Savannah of Storybook Heirlooms™, Laura Ashley®, Collector's Lane®, Creative Doll Company®, Springfield Collection®, Sophia's Heritage Collection®, Autumn Harvest™ and Our Generation™ and miscellaneous composition and porcelain dolls. Since some dolls, such as Liberty Landing®, Autumn Harvest™ and Our Generation™, are a little thinner, you may want to check the size of your doll and adjust the pattern slightly for a better fit. Infinite Freedom and Sally Robertson are not associated with any of the above named dolls or companies in any way.
