Russian clothing for 18-inch dolls: The sarafan is the traditional Russian clothing worn in the north. It is a long flared tunic hanging from the shoulders on a small yoke. The fabric is a blue, gold, or red brocade with braid stitched down the front. Under it is worn a short blouse with very full sleeves. The striking headdress for young girls is called a povoiniki. The shape of the silk or velvet headress is stiffened by cardboard. It is embroidered with beads, semi-precious jewels, and freshwater pearls from Russian rivers and lakes. These elaborate costumes are handed down to family members for many generations. The Russian clothing sewing pattern includes the blouse, dress and hat.

Russian clothing fits 18-inch dolls (those with vinyl head, arms and legs and a cloth stuffed body) such as The American Girls Collection® by the Pleasant Company, Götz Dolls® (non-designer) and many others. The Russian clothing is actually designed to fit The American Girls Collection® and Götz Dolls® (non-designer) loosely to allow for individual differences in the stuffing of the dolls. It will also fit the following dolls: Dress Me Doll© from The Martha Pullen Company, Faithful Friends Collection®, Liberty Landing®, Girls on the Go®, Savannah of Storybook Heirlooms™, Laura Ashley®, Collector's Lane®, Creative Doll Company®, Springfield Collection®, Sophia's Heritage Collection®, Autumn Harvest™ and Our Generation™ and miscellaneous composition and porcelain dolls. Since some dolls, such as Liberty Landing®, Autumn Harvest™ and Our Generation™, are a little thinner, you may want to check the size of your doll and adjust the pattern slightly for a better fit.
