This is a very nice updated version of the book that Grace L. Knott wrote on smocking many years ago. It covers everything you need to know to successfully smock including pleating by hand, gathering using a pleater, and making basic stitches and combinations of stitches. In addition, there is a section on sewing advanced, fill-in stitches and other special smocking stitches such as the honeycomb. Descriptions are also included for the preparation and smocking of bishop-style garments. There are large, clear illustrations for every step.

Ten attractive smocking plates that would work well on a child's dress are described in detail and illustrated in large color photographs. These are entirely new smocking plates and different than those in the original book. It is a beautiful book.
