What a treat to capture a picture of these Bighorn Sheep! While driving in the mountains taking pictures for the Elizabeth Lace Insertion Nightgown pattern instructions, I came across these mountain sheep near Empire, Colorado. They are very rare and live above timberline. However, they sometimes come down along I-70 as it winds through the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Even so, people often miss seeing them as they drive through the mountains. Their color is so similar to the rocks they inhabit, they just blend into the background.
Ted Andrews in "Animal-Speak" says, "Bighorn sheep, like mountain goats, have toes that pinch. The hooves are covered with an elastic material that helps absorb the shocks and aid the grip. The joints of the sheep act as miniature shock absorbers when they make their great leaps down. The bighorn sheep only need a two-inch space to get a foothold."
