Storybook Heirlooms Dolls: Anne of Green Gables Costume Pattern

Anne of Green Gables smock dress and pinafore

The Anne of Green Gables pattern for making storybook heirlooms includes directions for the smock dress, pinafore, boots, stockings, carpetbag, hat, plus the undergarments of a vest and drawers.

Anne's smock dress has a Peter Pan collar, long sleeves with buttoned cuffs and a dirndl skirt. The bodice is self-lined and buttons at the back. The print calico was stained using tea bags before cutting out to achieve an old and worn look appropriate for storybook heirlooms. The pinafore has a self-lined yoke that buttons at the back. The skirt is gathered where it is attached to the yoke and has two patch pockets.

The boots are made from old and worn leather, if possible, so the boots will look like well-worn shoes. If you do not have old and worn leather, directions are given for distressing new leather.

The carpetbag is made from woven cotton jacquard or a lightweight tapestry fabric. The handles are leather. The hat is stained with tea and the edges of Anne's straw hat are frayed so it will have the right look for storybook heirlooms.

The storybook heirloom vest is made from winceyette, a knitted fabric that stretches when sewn. This characteristic can be used to create a simple scalloped edge. The neck is edged in white lace. The drawers are made with an elasticized waist, the only decoration on these drawers is the scalloped edges to the legs.

We all remember the classic storybook by L. M. Montgomery "Anne of Green Gables." Just to jog your memory, here is a quote on how the book starts out:

Mrs. Rachel Lynde lived just where the Avonlea main road dipped down into a little hollow, fringed with alders and ladies' eardrops and traversed by a brook that had its source away back in the woods of the old Cuthbert place; it was reputed to be an intricate, headlong brook in its earlier course through those woods, with dark secrets of pool and cascade; but by the time it reached Lynde's Hollow it was a quiet well-conducted little stream, for not even a brook could run past Mrs. Rachel Lynde's door without due regards for decency and decorum; it probably was conscious that Mrs. Rachel was sitting at her window, keeping a sharp eye on everything that passed, from brooks and children up, and that if she noticed anything odd or out of place she would never rest until she had ferreted out the whys and wherefores thereof.
