The patterns were designed to be straightforward and uncomplicated. If you are making your first quilt or if you are an experienced quilt maker who needs to whip up a quick project, then one of the quilts in the first part of the book would be a good choice: "Cobblestones," "Pink Lemonade," "Wonder Baby," "Baby Bow Ties," "Bright Garden," "Petite Bouquets," and "Little Buddy" are exceptionally quick and easy patterns. Family Hearts" and "Wiggle Flowers" are both easy quilt patterns featuring applique and good choices if you like applique or are not that comfortable with machine piecing. Both lend themselves to all types of applique --- hand, machine, or fusible. "Sunny Sailors," :Baby Baskets," "Pipsqueak Picnic," "Evening Stars," and "Topsy Turvy Hearts" look complex but are actually easy and include remarkably clever construction methods. For example, "Pipsqueak Picnic" may have many pieces and lots of triangles, but all the patches start out as simple squares and rectangles; you never have to cut or hold a triangle to make the quilt. If you look at "Topsy Turvy Hearts" you'll see stars peeking out among the hearts, but you never have to piece a star block. All the quilts provide an opportunity to play with color, light, pattern, and rhythm, and to send a message of loving welcome to a new baby. Theme or Conversation Prints are just that --- printed fabrics based on a theme or consisting of small images. Choose one fun fabric that you really want to work with. Then look at the colors in that fabric and pick a few of those for the rest of the quilt. Or, choose one color in the print and use several shades of that color. For example, in "Playmates" there is a little girl in a pink dress on one fabric. Mary used that same pink plus a darker one and a lighter one. That created a lovely frame around the children and made a traditional-style quilt. Mary says that making quilts for her first grandchild, Audrey, has given her a wealth of inspiration for blocks, settings and colors for the easy quilt patterns in her book. But more than that, it has given her a chance to channel the energy from the huge flood of love she feels for Audrey into these quilt patterns. Mary thinks of a baby quilt as a wrapping of love that conveys a message of tenderness and devotion. Stitching a quilt for a baby is an opportunity to create something of lasting beauty which can carry our message of love and warmth into the future as the child grows. Mary Hickey is happy to share these easy quilt patterns with you in her book "Sweet and Simple Baby Quilts."
